shattered pieces

pretending is not child’s play

but the language of secrets kept

building block walls, ruined sand castles and

let’s play house

on the shore of twilight and make believe

runs a child, a shattered piece

sand bucket in tow, waves rushing at feet.

sand castles, and tag and “you can’t catch me.”

echoes of giggles and laughter and song

or was it a sob: “you can’t catch me?”
