When we hear about the sexual abuse of children, we are disturbed and anxious.  Often our first response is to give our children skills, to scream, to run, to do whatever they can to keep themselves safe.  Caring adults make sure their children know about “good” touch and “bad” touch and encourage kids to tell.  But only one in ten tell. And often the consequences of telling are trauma producing again.

 Current prevention programs are actually risk management.

¨       Current methods actually send the message that sexual abuse is going to happen.  It is to be expected, but this is how you manage it.

¨       They make children responsible for preventing or stopping sexual abuse.  Children do not have the power, sophistication or fearlessness to stop sexual abuse.

¨       Current methods absolve adults of further responsibility for changing our culture which allows child sexual abuse to happen.

 Adults need to: "BE THE SCREAM"

     The screams of a child being sexually abused are seldom audible.  And if released, never heard outside his/her bedroom. 

The burden for stopping child sexual abuse belongs with adults, not with kids.  We are responsible for protecting the rights and innocence of childhood.

     We as adults will “Be the Scream”.  Our screams will send the message to perpetrators that although kids will scream or not, we will.  We are more than just disturbed and anxious; we are outraged. Sexual abuse of our children must stop!
